Karoo Research – Sedimentology, Hydrocarbon Potential and CO2 Sequestration

The Karoo Research Initiative (KARIN) is a multi-disciplinary project incorporated in the NRF-DST Cente of Excellence for Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA) that is co-hosted at the University of Johannesburg and University of the Witwatersrand.  The University of Pretoria is involved in research from the beginning of the project planning which was initiated and led by Prof Annette Götz that left the Department in 2015.

KARIN aims to explore all aspects of Karoo sedimentary and igneous rocks and their influence on the shale gas and unconventional hydrocarbon potential of the Karoo Basin.  Several South African universities and universities abroad are integrated in this project.  Close cooperation exists between national and international researchers from South Africa, Europe and from the industry.

For further information contact the Head of the Department Prof Wlady Altermann, or Dr Nils Lenhardt.
