Lecturer wins Community Engagement Award

Posted on June 01, 2018

Dr Rautenbach, a Senior Lecturer in the Centre of Geoinformation Sciences (CGIS), was awarded the 2018 Community Engagement Award by the University of Pretoria. In her work with final year BSc Geoinformatics students, Dr Rautenbach coordinates the mapping and visualisation of an informal settlement called Alaska in the east of Mamelodi (City of Tshwane). Over the last couple of years this final year project has been incredibly successful, with two projects having won awards and two other projects selected as finalists. This project has not only contributed to the daily life of residents in Alaska, but also been an awarding learning experience for all students involved. And although the Community Engagement award is for an individual, it would have been impossible without the support of colleagues, the dedication of the students, the welcoming community of Alaska and Viva Foundation. For more on this award and Dr Rautenbach please have a look at pg. 49-51 of the Academic Achiever's Awards 2018 Booklet.

Congratulations, Dr Rautenbach, and congratulations to all the students, the Alaska community and the Viva Foundation!
