Review process

Types of review processes:

  1. Conventional ethical approval: Postgraduate students and staff members submit proposals and research projects via the online system 'Research Ethics and Grants' on UP Portal
  2. Declaration of ethical intent: Staff members (Lecturers) responsible for undergraduate modules that include empirical research, must submit declarations of ethical intent to the FTREC for review and approval. The appropriate application form is available on this site.

Overview of conventional ethical approval process:

  1. Student compiles research proposal with the help of supervisor
  2. When student and supervisor are reasonably satisfied with the proposal, it is submitted via the online system, 'Research Grants and Ethics' on the UP Portal
  3. The proposal is sent for review by subject specialists and at least two members of the FTREC
  4. The student is notified via the online system if there outstanding information, remarks or questions by the reviewers. The student responds to these.
  5. When the application for ethical clearance and the research proposal is approved, the student receives a notification letter and the student must keep this for record purposes.
