Posted on July 26, 2018

The Centre for Child Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria is, together with UNICEF HQ, hosting a UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty - Consultation on Children in Institutions in Pretoria from 26 to 27 July 2018. The main purpose of this event is international thematic consultations on children in institutions.  The Centre for Child Law is leading the 'Institutions' pillar of the Global Study.

The UN Global Study on Children Deprived of their Liberty aims to count all children deprived of liberty in the world and come up with a report recommending strategies to end or reduce the deprivation of children's liberty.

Professor of International Law and Human Rights from the University of Vienna, Manfred Nowak, is the independent expert leading the study.  He is one of the key speakers at this event today and his presentation will inter alia deal with an overview of the aims and objectives of the global study.  Professor Manfred’s visit was purposely timed to coincide with the Advanced Short Court on Children’s Right in Africa, co-presented by the Centre for Child Law; the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria and the Dullah Omar Institute based at the University of the Western Cape.

The programme also includes contributions from Inspecting Judge of Prisons, Johann van der Westhuizen (retired Justice of the South African Constitutional Court and currently the Head of the Department of Jurisprudence in the Faculty of Law).

Retired Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Dikgang Moseneke, will be the key speaker at tonight’s event, on his experience as a teenage boy in prison.

Professor Ann Skelton, the Director of the Centre for Child Law, is the Chairperson of the International Advisory Group of the UN Global Study.
