Professor Corinne Sandwith

Humanities 2015 Researcher of the Year Languages Cluster

Professor Corinne Sandwith, Department of English

Corinne Sandwith obtained her PhD from the University of KwaZuluNatal where she also taught in the English Studies Department for many years. In 2014, she joined the English Department at the University of Pretoria. Published books and edited collections include World of Letters: Reading Communities and Cultural Debates in Early Apartheid South Africa (2014) and Africa South: Viewpoints, 1958-1961, co-edited with MJ Daymond (2011). Her research interests include the history of reading, criticism and public debate in early apartheid South Africa with a particular focus on marginalised and oppositional reading and debating communities. World of Letters explores the traces of a hidden history of literary-cultural debate in South Africa in a wide range of public forums, including dissident newspapers and ‘little magazines’, debating societies, book clubs and theatre groups. Her research interests also include work on the contemporary public sphere, particularly the South/African postcolony. In this area, she has published on the debates which arose in the context of anti-foreigner violence in 2008; on the representation of crime and violence in the tabloid newspaper, The Daily Sun; and on inscriptions of the body in the novels of Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
