SPMA launches inaugural Chris Thornhill Prestige Lecture Series

Posted on August 31, 2018

The School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) hosted its inaugural Chris Thornhill Prestige Lecture Series on 14 August as part of the School’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The theme for this year’s celebratory events is ‘25 years – reflection, relevance and readiness’.

During this breakfast meeting, Prof Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu, Director of the SPMA, acknowledged Prof Thornhill (the first Director of the School) for his distinguished career as a practitioner and academic in the discipline of public administration and management. In attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, members of the School’s Advisory Board, practitioners in the field, fellow academics, and postgraduate students.

Dr Jakkie Cilliers of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) addressed the meeting and provided insights into several major transitions that are shaping Africa's future. He also explored key trends that are likely to unfold in Africa until 2035 – more details on this topic can be found in the policy brief on African futures: Key trends to 2025.

The vision with this series is to stimulate debate around contemporary issues that influence the teaching and practise of public administration, and therefore this will become an annual event.  An SPMA bulletin was also distributed, showcasing some of the activities and initiatives that the School is involved in.
