African Tax Institute

The African Tax Institute (ATI) is devoted to training, research and technical assistance in the areas of tax policy and tax administration on the African continent. Its main goal is to develop capacity in ministries of finance and revenue authorities. Towards this goal, the ATI offers an interdisciplinary masters’ degree in taxation and a PhD in tax policy, primarily to students from the public sector. The main research areas of ATI staff and students include tax policy, international taxation, natural resource taxation, value-added tax, fiscal decentralization and property taxation.

Public Policy Hub

The UP Public Policy Hub (PPH) is envisioned to foster greater adoption of sustainable, evidence-based public policies in Africa by promoting collaboration between academic research and government public policy through the co-creation of transdisciplinary and policy-relevant research for better development outcomes in Africa.

The Energy Economics Research Unit

The Energy Economics Research Unit seeks to provide evidence-based, impactful, data-driven research on energy and environmental economics issues for South Africa, the African continent and the world.
