South Africa – The Structure of Things Then by David Goldblatt

This book is the culmination of 15 years of photography, research and writing by the acclaimed South African photographer David Goldblatt, who passed away recently. In 136 powerfully evocative black and white photographs, Mr Goldblatt critically probes the relationships between South African structures and the forces that shaped the society from 1652 to 1990; the period he called the era of ‘baasskap’ or white domination. His is a seminal exploration that compels the reader to look afresh at South Africa’s cultural heritage and to ask, 'what do these structures signify? What convictions, hopes and fears went into their building?'
