Posted on January 01, 2018

Two staff members from the Interlibrary Loans Unit, Rachel Mahlangu and Maria Mtsweni (Jotello F Soga Library) delivered their first conference paper at the 18th Annual LIASA Conference, held at the Birchwood Conference Centre from 2-6 October 2017.

The title of the paper was:  Impact of the re-envisioned academic library on interlibrary loan services: the case of the Department of Library Services, University of Pretoria. It addressed current trends in the research and academic library environment, with special emphasis on the role and importance of interlibrary loans in providing information need support services. Based on a case study at the Jotello F Soga Library at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, the importance of collaboration as well as national and international networks was highlighted. Quantitative and qualitative evidence were provided to demonstrate how interlibrary loans contribute to a high standard of service delivery to researchers and other users. They concluded with a brief discussion on current opinions on the impact of future directions in the research and academic library environments with special reference to the role and functions of interlibrary lending and how it will influence information need support in future.

Rachel and Maria both agreed that they had learned a lot from this experience, which they view as a highlight in their professional careers.
