Organisations

National:

The South African Council for Automation Control (SACAC) is the national member organisation of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). The council aims to promote the science and practice of automation and control for the benefit and economic prosperity of the people of South Africa. To achieve this aim, SACAC organizes and participates in national and international conferences and workshops, and facilitates discussions between researchers, practitioners, users and suppliers of automation technology. SACAC hosted the World Congress of IFAC in August 2014 in Cape Town. This prestigious conference had over 2000 delegates from accross the globe presenting papers in 25 parallel sessions.

SACAC will host the Control Conference Africa (CCA 2017) at Liliesleaf Farm in Johannesburg from 7 to 8 December 2017. CCA 2017 seeks to promote the exchange of ideas and developments in control engineering in Africa and builds on previous South African events in control engineering. The CCA 2017 conference specifically addresses control engineers from African countries, African control engineers based abroad who wish to reconnect to their roots, and all control engineers who want to connect with Africa. Both academic and industrial control engineering practitioners have the opportunity to present their work and exchange research ideas with colleagues from across the globe.

The Control Systems research group has deep roots in SACAC. The group head, Prof Ian Craig is a past President of the council, and also part of the current executive committee. Dr le Roux joined the executive committee in 2014, and is the current treasurer of the council.

International:

The International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) was founded in September 1957. This multinational federation is concerned with automatic control and its representation in the fields of engineering, science and the impact of control technology on society.

Since IFAC is the largest control and automation organisation of its kind, the Control System group aims to regularly participate in IFAC conferences to build relationships with the best researchers in the world. Apart from this, our alumni serve on the Technical Committees concerned with organising international events. Furthermore, the group head, Prof Ian Craig, served as President of IFAC from 2011 to 2014.
