NOTICE TO ASPIRANT JUDGES RE APPLICATIONS

Applications to be a Judge on the 2023 Bench are officially open! 
 

 

A. General Terms, Conditions and Notices: 

  1. This notice does not reflect an exhaustive set of terms and conditions applicable to the appointment of Judges of the UP Constitutional Tribunal (Student Court).
  2. Applicants warrant that they, to the best of their knowledge, satisfy and will continue to satisfy the eligibility requirements set out in the Constitution of the Constitutional Tribunal and the University of Pretoria Constitution for Student Governance.
  3. Judges are required to, amongst other things: uphold the highest professional standards in respect of their work and conduct; to be diligent and committed; and to abide by the applicable Rules and Regulations.
  4. Applicants are hereby informed that Judgeships are non-remunerated positions. Judges are paid a compensatory stipend in the form of an honorarium, the amount of which is set by the Department of Student Affairs from time to time. This honorarium is typically paid in two bi-annual installments.
  5. The JSC reserves the right to, in accordance with its appointing powers, appoint or not appoint any applicant to any position advertised and further reserves the right to re-open and/or re-advertise any position.

  7. Please submit all documents in PDF format only. Please ensure that all documents are labelled as follows: Surname + Name + (Student Number) + Document Type *Any documents labelled incorrectly will be rejected, resulting in a defective application and a rejection of the application as a whole.

 

B. Summary of Eligibility Requirements:**

1. Aspirant Judges must be a UP Student for the period of appointment and:

  • At least in penultimate year of LLB; or
  • At least in final year of BCom (Law) (i.e. BCom (Law) III);
  • At least final year of BA (Law) (i.e. BA (Law) III); or
  • LLM Candidate at UP (research LLM candidates need a progress letter).

2. Aspirant Judges must have a 65% Grade Point Average for the semester preceding the semester of appointment;

3. Aspirant Judges must not have been found guilty of misconduct for breach of the Disciplinary Code or Rules and Regulations by the Disciplinary Committee (Students).

 

C. Information/Documents Required (Must be Attached in/to the Application):  

1.          A Motivational Letter;

2.          A full Curriculum Vitae;

3.          A full Academic Transcript;***

4.          A copy of Passport or ID;

5.          *Proof of Registration as a UP Student for the term.****

 

D. Administrative Information:

  1. Please refer to any advertisements or notices released by the UP Judicial Services Commission (JSC) pertaining to any particular round of appointments for further details.

** For all of the eligibility requirements and limitations: see section 36 of the CSG and Schedule 2 of the Constitution of the Constitutional Tribunal (must be read together).

*** Transcripts must indicate academic averages/GPA’s for previous semesters in percentages; or in the alternative, some proof of academic averages/GPA’s for previous semester in percentages must be furnished.

****Only if applying for a position after the commencement of the academic year for which the position is being offered. However, the applicant warrants in all instances that they will be registering – or are registered – as a UP student for the year for which they are applying to serve.
