Diagnostic Imaging Research

 Our current research areas are:

  • Imaging anatomy of the Pangolin
  • Imaging features of captive Black Footed Cats
  • Echocardiography of equine African Horse Sickness cases
  • Diagnostic imaging education – innovative teaching and learning strategies
Meet the researchers and lecturers

Dr Nicolene Hoepner

BVSc, BVSs(Hons)
Section Head
Lecturer: Diagnostic Imaging

Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8002
Email: [email protected]
ORCID ID: 0000-0002-8697-8143

For her MMedVet degree, Dr Hoepner investigated cardiac involvement in horses with African Horse Sickness by means of echocardiography. Other research interests include other cardiac imaging, imaging anatomy of wildlife and exotic species, equine distal limb imaging, and innovative teaching and learning strategies in diagnostic imaging.

Sandra de Sousa Jesus

LicVetMed, MSc, PhD
Senior Lecturer: Diagnostic Imaging

Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8138
Email: [email protected]
ORCID ID: 0000-0001-8119-8722

Dr de Sousa Jesus’s main interest is canine diagnostic imaging, particularly radiography and computed tomography. In 2011 she received her PhD in CT imaging patterns, molecular study (p53 and EGFR) and immunohistochemistry of canine gliomas. Other interests include imaging of wild animals.

Dr Keith Spargo

BSc, BSc(Hons), MSc(Vet Sc), BVSc
Lecturer: Diagnostic Imaging

Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8138
Email: [email protected]
ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9133-7295

Dr Spargo’s research focus for his MSc degree was on catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses in South Africa and investigated the types of fractures that occur and potential influencing factors. This is a research area that still holds great interest to him, especially the use of diagnostic imaging modalities for the early detection of subchondral bone changes that may be an early sign of potential fracturing of the bone. Currently, Dr Spargo is working on describing the Computed Tomography anatomy of the Temminck’s Pangolin as part of his residency in diagnostic imaging.
