Taxation shines the spotlight on research

Posted on April 11, 2018

Research has received significant attention at the Department of Taxation in UP’s Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences thus far this year.

On 28 February 2018, the PhD preparation programme, a first of its kind for the Department of Taxation, commenced. Prof Theuns Steyn, Head of the Department, met with six potential PhD students, four of which are staff members in the Faculty. After a short introduction into research philosophy, a break-down of the programme and the way forward, the students briefly discussed their potential topics with valuable inputs from Prof Steyn.

The Department also endeavoured its first departmental research day of 2018 on 19 March. The idea of the day was for academic staff members in the Department to share their own research in a friendly environment. Members presented their doctoral research, in-process articles, intended attendance of conferences or ideas on future research. Prof Lisa Marriott, a visiting academic from the School of Accounting and Commercial Law at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, had valuable and welcome contributions to the presented research. Her visit contributed immensely towards research capacity building in the Department.

Prof Chris Evans from the University of New South Wales, Australia, also visited the Department of Taxation as the Department’s extraordinary professor from 28 to 29 March 2018. His significant contribution to research capacity building is of great value to the Department as well as to the University.
