Ph.D. (Engineering)

The main requirement for a Ph.D. in Engineering is encapsulated in the requirement below quoted from the UP School of Engineering Yearbook 2015.
“The student must provide proof by means of his work, thesis and examination of advanced original research and/or creative work which makes a real and substantial contribution to the knowledge of engineering science and/or practice.”

In practice, this requirement is demonstrated by a student defining and undertaking research which leads to the following outcomes:

  • At least one paper either published in or accepted for publication in a leading international journal.
  • At least one paper submitted to a leading international journal.
  • The presentation of a thesis which expands on the papers written on the basis of the student’s research. The thesis must be successfully defended to an examination panel consisting of two international experts in the relevant field of study.
  • A Ph.D. cannot be awarded less than one year after the completion of Masters-Degree studies.
