Posted on October 03, 2017

Leon Gerber, Programme Coordinator of the LLM in Extractive Industry Law in Africa and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Law, was recently invited to participate in a high-level trade seminar hosted by H.E. Ambassador Francisco Berguño and the Trade Commission of Chile to South Africa.

The seminar, which was held in Sandhurst on 2 October 2017, examined Chilean mining policies and institutions with the aim of facilitating knowledge exchange between country counterparts.   Discussions were directed at how Chile managed to harness its role as the world´s largest copper producer to drive diversification and value addition, and how this might be replicated on the African continent.  The success of the Chilean state-owned mining company Empresa Nacional de Minería ( commonly known as ENAMI) in internationalising domestic small- and medium-scale mining sectors, as well as its role in acting as an economic springboard towards the development of other industries, were also discussed in detail.

The session highlighted the value and mutual benefits that are possible through international dialogue and cooperation.
