Seminar on development and the prevention of violent conflict

Posted on July 28, 2016

On a recent trip to the United States, Prof Laurie Nathan participated in a meeting at Princeton University, arranged by the United Nations and the World Bank, on the relationship between development and the prevention of violent conflict. Development for this purpose was defined broadly to include governance, human rights and peace negotiations. Laurie also presented a seminar at the UN on the topic of how and why African mediators compromise democracy (http://www.up.ac.za/media/shared/237/PDFs/nathan-mediators-compromise-democracy.zp92866.pdf). The seminar was hosted by the UN Department of Political Affairs and provoked a lively debate on the relationship between mediation and democracy.
