The purpose of this option is to train environmental graduates specialised for careers in the ecology of the environment. On completion of the training, candidates should be conversant and be able to partake in, or render advice concerning, all aspects involved in the management of the ecological consequences of human existence. This includes a thorough grounding in ecosystem structure, composition and function, ecosystem services, notions of ecosystem health, the management of declining and small populations, captive propagation, control of invasive species, species and community restoration, conservation education, local communities and conservation, as well as aspects of biogeography and macro-ecology, conservation planning and monitoring, the structure, composition and function of biological communities, population and community variability. Obtaining this degree will facilitate obtaining a conservation-oriented position in industry. The student will obtain direct exposure to the environmental industry. Upon obtaining this degree, the student also will be qualified to write the professional examination required for certified internal environmental auditors. Professional examinations could be written with the IEMA-approved International Register of Certified Auditors (IRCA).

 


 

Core modules (30 credits):

  •  ENV 810:  Environmental paradigms (15 credits)
  •  ENV 816:  Environmental law (15 credits)
  • ** Stats and anylysis/GIS only on recommendation of Supervisor

Specialisation modules (60 credits): (4 modules)

  • 1 x Zoology module approved by HOD and Director (15 Credits)
  •  ENS822:   Strategic Environmental Management (15 credits)
  •  ENV833:  Trees om a multifuncional landscape (15 credits) 
  •  OMS881:  Environmental Change (15 credits)
