  • Drug induced antibiotic resistance reversion in M. tuberculosis - genomic study and comparison of clinical Mtb populations and new drug design. Supervisor: Prof O Reva (UP)
  • Development of new technologies for an automatic screening and evaluation of anti-staphylococcal phage based medicinal personalized preparations by analysis of CRISPR/Cas and complete genome sequences of pathogens generated by NGS.  Supervisor: Prof O Reva (UP)

Biotherapeutics Research Group: Multifunctional antimicrobial peptides for the prevention and treatment of chronic infections LINK

  • Design of defensin derivatives with enhanced antimicrobial activity and stability
  • Investigation of the anti-biofilm activity and mode of action of defensin derivatives

Complementary and Alternative Medicines Group LINK

Positions for 2017: 2 Honours, 1 MSc and 1 PhD student

  • CAM: Biomarker identification by univariate and multivariate statistics, in Citrus rootstocks, for resistance to plant pathogens, by UPLC/MS. Verification of putative biomarkers with authentic standards by semi-prep HPLC, followed by MS and NMR [MSc/PhD]. Supervisors: Prof Apostolides (Dept Biochemistry), Prof V Maharaj (Dept Chemistry), Prof N Labuschagne (Dept Plant pathology)
  • CAM: Biomarker identification by univariate and multivariate statistics, in honeys, for wound healing properties, by UPLC/MS. Structure verification by semi-prep HPLC, followed by semi-prep HPLC followed by MS and NMR [MSc/PhD]. Supervisors: Prof Apostolides (Dept Biochemistry), Prof V Maharaj (Dept Chemistry), Prof M Bester (Dept Anatomy)
