TEACHING

Anika Grobler recently joined the Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria.  She was the coordinator for the Interior Design programme at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth for nearly 7 years and was also responsible for the BTech Interior Design offering. She currently co-ordinates and lectures in the third year design studio, while also teaching third year design threory. She has been an external examiner at the University of Johannesburg and the NMMU.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Anika Grobler facilitated an interior design intervention project for alternative solutions for compact living in collaboration with HDK – Academy of Design and Craft of the Universithy of Gothenburg. While at the NMMU, she was the programme representative for the Design Education Forum of South Africa (DEFSA), the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) and The African Institute of the Interior Design Professions (IID).   

RESEARCH

 

Anika Grobler served on the editorial board of the South African Journal of Art History (SAJAH) and has reviewed articles for SAJAH and Image and Text.  She is currently supervising 3 MInt(Prof) students and is reading towards her proposal for registeration for a PhD. Her main research interest is the relational condition between social production of space and its cultural significance in interiors, especially the interface between the tangible and intangible.  She is particularly interested in the dynamic model of space and place creation and the meanings and connotations people assign to these experiences which are layered and rich with opportunities for interpretation.
