Academic programmes

Undergraduate training 

Undergraduate training takes place over a period of four years (eight semesters) and is compiled in such a way that the student is properly trained in scientific knowledge and technical skills in order to develop a career in almost any field in the livestock industry. A foundation of basic principles is provided in the first year, followed by more advanced courses in animal nutrition, animal physiology and animal breeding in the second and third year. In the fourth year of study, all the principles are integrated in modules that focus primarily on the management of livestock, poultry and wildlife. Two degrees are offered, namely BSc(Agric) Animal Science and BSc(Agric) Animal Science/Pasture Science

Postgraduate training 

 

We have a responsibility in terms of training postgraduates who have a clear and growing understanding of animal science in the Southern African context, and also with the ability to develop and contribute to the international animal industry.  postgraduate training is focused on specialisation in a specific field and/or species chosen and the development of advanced scientific skills

MSc (Agric)

This is a two-year degree which includes coursework, seminars and a research project which is written up as a dissertation. Admittance requirements: The student must have a BSc(Agric) degree with an average mark of 60% in his chosen field of specialisation

PhD 

 

This includes an original, independent research project and thesis that will contribute to the advancement of animal science. Admittance requirements: the student must have an applicable master’s degree.

Postgradute studies in Wildlife Management 

The Centre for Wildlife Management operates from within the Department of Animal and Wildlife Sciences, and offers these postgraduate degrees. The duration of the studies varies depending on the degree. Four main research focus areas have been identified in which the majority of postgraduate students are accommodated, namely animal physiology (growth, reproduction, adaptation, meat science), animal breeding (quantitative and molecular animal breeding and genetics), animal nutrition (monogastric and ruminant nutrition) and production management (different species and production systems). A high standard of training and research is maintained and research results are published in local and international scientific journals.
