Passing of Prof Johannes A.G. Malherbe (Jan)
It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Prof. Jan Malherbe.
From 1970 to 1980, he was an Associate Professor with the University of Stellenbosch. In 1981 he moved to the University of Pretoria, where he was Professor until 1988, and from 1989 to 1999 Dean of Engineering. In 1994 he became a Fellow of the IEEE, highly recognized for exceptional research internationally. From 2000 to his retirement in 2005, he was Vice-Principal. He has subsequently been with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, University of Pretoria. During this time Prof. Malherbe presented the Introduction to Research module EIN732 to postgraduate students within the Department. In 2009 he became a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
Prof. Malherbe was a Fellow of the SA Academy of Engineering and the SAIEE and a member of the SA Academy of Science. He was a recipient of the Havenga Prize for Engineering by the SA Academy for Science and Art and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal. He published 43 IEEE publications and over 271 citations.
"Prof Malherbe's devotion to his students, colleagues, and the pursuit of knowledge will long be remembered. His warm presence and keen intellect will be sorely missed by those who had the pleasure of working with him. I have personally benefitted from his incredible knowledge and he has been an active member of our department until a few years ago on a post retirement contract.

Prof, you will be deeply missed by so many of us. We will remember how you always spoke with so much wisdom and stature, always having a joke here and there. Thank you for the contribution that you made to the lives of so many students, colleagues and friends.
