Master of Education (MEd) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - Specialisation in Early Childhood and Foundation Phase

Our postgraduate programmes offer a deep dive into research and advanced practices in early childhood education. MEd students focus on applied research and leadership in educational settings, while PhD candidates engage in original research contributing to the body of knowledge in early childhood and foundation phase education.

Magister Educationis (MEd)
This research programme is composed of a research proposal and a dissertation. It is presented in the following fields of specialisation:

  • General: Early Childhood Education (09250006)

A. Requirements for admission

A candidate can be admitted if he/she holds one of the following qualifications:

  1. a BEdHons degree/BEd (Postgraduate); or
  2. an applicable Honours degree and a teacher’s diploma; and
  3. has achieved an average of at least 60% in the Honours or related examination.

B. Selection procedure
Selection is based on:

  1. meeting the minimum academic requirements required for admission;
  2. previous academic performance;
  3. applicable academic and/or teaching background;
  4. availability of supervision for the required research project;
  5. proven academic potential which may include academic communication and computer application skills;
  6. additionally, an interview may be requested;
  7. the requirements of professional registration bodies;
  8. the discretion of the head of department.

C. Duration
The programme must be completed within two years. Please note that classes will be
presented at least once a month on a Saturday from 8:00 - 16:00 for all the MEd programmes (NMQ 801).

Checklist

  • Make sure that you have the required qualifications. If your latest qualification was obtained at a foreign university, it must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). 
  • Please start with the evaluation of qualifications process as soon as you have identified the programme for which you wish to enrol. This is a lengthy process and will require you to start as soon as possible.
  • Read up about your chosen department on the UP website. Email queries to the administrator of your chosen department.
  • Have your official complete academic transcript of your latest qualification ready in order for your application to be considered. Make sure that you have all the necessary information 
    about your proposed study programme.
  • Decide whether you need funding and make enquiries about what is available to you.

Tip: Please pay attention to opening and closing dates for applying to study at UP. We do not want you to miss out!

UP APPLICATION PROCESS FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

  • Go to ‘Apply at UP’: www.up.ac.za/online-application
  • Complete the application form. 
  • Check the correctness of the information you supplied on the online application form.
  • Submit your application.
  • You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt email with your student number.
  • Your faculty and/or academic department will now consider your application.
  • The outcome of your application can be tracked via the UP Student Centre by following the instructions contained in the acknowledgement letter that was sent to you.
