Building Foundations for Literacy: Reading for Meaning Workshop with ECE Practitioners in Mamelodi

Organised by Dr Martina, the workshop provided a welcoming and reflective space for early childhood practitioners to explore how reading can be meaningfully integrated into their daily classroom routines. Dr Madonda guided the session, drawing attention to developmentally appropriate strategies for engaging young learners with texts, moving beyond rote recitation to active understanding, discussion, and connection-making.

The event was supported by the attendance of two officials from the Department of Basic Education (DBE), demonstrating institutional interest in the professional development of ECE practitioners. Participants were treated to tea and scones, fostering a warm, collegial environment conducive to learning and exchange. Each practitioner received a certificate of attendance, recognising their commitment to enhancing literacy in their teaching practice.

This workshop marks the beginning of a promising partnership between the University of Pretoria, local NGOs, and Shuter & Shooter Publishers. Together, the aim is to support ongoing professional development and equip practitioners with practical, evidence-informed methods for conducting reading activities in early childhood settings.

As literacy continues to be a cornerstone of lifelong learning, initiatives like these ensure that those working with our youngest learners are empowered to lay strong and lasting foundations.
