Dr Roy Venketsamy biography

Dr Roy Venketsamy holds the position of Senior lecturer and researcher at the University of Pretoria, responsible for Mathematics Education in the Foundation Phase. He holds the following qualifications  BA (Edu; Psy; Hist) ; B.Ed (Hons); BA-Psy (Hons) from UNISA, he also holds a Master’s Degree in Education Psychology, and Doctorates in Education Psychology, from the University of Zululand. His field of expertise is Foundation Phase Education and Life Skills/ Life Orientation. He worked at the Ministry of Education (DBE)(15 years)  where he was responsible for policy development, materials development and capacity building of curriculum advisor and subject specialist in the country. He was responsible for the development and training of the RNCS; NCS & CAPS for the Ministry of Education and the largest teacher Union in South Africa: SADTU (South African Democratic Teachers’ Union). He is currently working together with the DBE to develop scripted lesson plan for Comprehensive Sexuality Education for all grades.

  • Lesson Study and Professional Teacher Development

Dr Roy has been extensively involved in capacity building on Lesson Study in Japan where he worked very closely with the Naruto University of Education on lesson study. He is currently promoting Lesson Study especially in the Foundation Phase through collaborative partnership with the Department of Basic Education through the Teacher Development Programme. Dr Roy is also involved actively as an external examiner and moderator for several universities. He is constantly reviewing and publishing academic articles in the field of professionalising teacher education.

In 2019 he was awarded the Best Supervisor of the Year in the Faculty of Education. He also received two research grants from the University of Pretoria to focus on his research areas. Dr Roy is passionate about supervision of Masters and PhD studies. He is currently co-ordinating the Early Grade Mathematics in ECE and the B.Ed Hons Learning Support programmes. He is also an active member of the Faculty Ethics Committee and serves as an academic support on the Faculty Transformation Committee. He is also eager to mentor and co-supervise with emerging academics in the ECE department.
