Undergraduate

The duration of the BEd (Early Childhood Development and Foundation Phase) Programme is four years full time. As prescribed by the national curriculum, the focus of the programme is on literacy, mathematics and life skills through enquiry and reflection. It is equally important for students to acquire knowledge, skills and opportunity to explore the influence of diverse life experiences, such as gender, socio-economic status, linguistic diversity, the effect of poverty and early identification and intervention. Additionally, students may specialise in either early childhood studies or learning support.

This programme also offers students practical learning which includes learning from and in practice. The learning in practice will take place in schools.

Postgraduate

A one-year postgraduate certificate with specialisation in Foundation Phase is offered by the Department. In addition, the Department of Early Childhood Education offers an honours programme (learning support). Academics in the department also supervise master's and doctorate students whose research focuses on various aspects concerning early childhood education.
