The UP Diabetes Research Centre prioritises research that focusses on developing innovative interventions to improve the care and outcomes of people living with diabetes. Those interventions adhere to the South African National Department of Health principles of an integrated people-centred health service approach, life course approach, cost-effectiveness approach and gendered approach. As a leader in translational research, the UP Diabetes Research Centre promotes interventions that are scalable and sustainable.
The research priorities at the UP Diabetes Research Centre are aligned to the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and the National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, 2022 – 2027.
The UP Diabetes Research Centre is organised around 6 research groups or clusters, leveraging the rich research expertise available within the Faculty of Health Sciences and beyond. Each group focusses on a specific diabetes field and is led by prominent experienced researchers from the University of Pretoria.
