Posted on March 15, 2021

The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

The Life of Andrew Murray of South Africa by Johannes Du Plessis.

Dr Andrew Murray (1828 – 1917) was a South African writer, teacher and Christian pastor. Born in Graaff Reinet, he obtained his master's degree in 1845 from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Murray studied theology at the University of Utrecht, and was ordained by the Hague Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church in 1848, after which he returned to the Cape. Murray pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, and it is estimated that he published over 240 books and tracts, many of them authored in both Dutch and English.

This biography consists of many unpublished letters and articles written by Murray. As stated in the preface: “It has seemed to [the author] that he could do no better than let Andrew Murray speak himself.”
