The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Doc Craven’s Tribute: The Legends of Springbok Rugby 1889-1989, edited by K. Clayton.

As a player, coach and administrator, Dr Danie Craven was intimately involved with Springbok rugby for over 60 years. In addition, it was one of his missions in a busy life to meet the great players who came before him. In cases where they were deceased, he went to great lengths to talk to their descendants about them, or to surviving teammates. There is therefore no doubt that Dr Craven was best qualified to pay fitting tribute to the legends of South African rugby on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its organised existence in South Africa. This is a book only he could have written and the result is a lasting and uniquely personal tribute to the giants of Springbok rugby, by perhaps the greatest of them all.
