FEATURING - Bo-Kaap: Inside Cape Town’s Malay Quarter by Robyn Wilkinson and Astrid Kragolsen-Kille

The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Bo-Kaap: Inside Cape Town’s Malay Quarter by Robyn Wilkinson and Astrid Kragolsen-Kille.

The Bo-Kaap is a vivid gem on the slopes of Signal Hill above Cape Town’s city centre. Its houses are bright and colourful and most of its people, proud of their rich cultural heritage, follow an Islamic lifestyle. This book offers a glimpse of this tight-knit community. Interviews with residents are interspersed with historical information. Lavishly illustrated recipes allow the reader to make “Cape Malay” dishes in their own homes. Some of the traditional ways of the Bo-Kaap’s residents are under threat from gentrification as investors move in and property prices increase. Through the pages of this book, the authors have captured the essence of this beautiful and historical area before it changes.
