FEATURING - Eden's Exiles: One Soldier's Fight for Paradise by Jan Breytenbach.

Library Special Collections Book of the Week (19 January 2026) Eden's Exiles: One Soldier's Fight for Paradise by Jan Breytenbach.

The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Eden's Exiles: One Soldier's Fight for Paradise by Jan Breytenbach.

Colonel Jan Breytenbach was legendary as a fearsome and hardened soldier who retired as the most decorated officer of the SADF. But few people know about the humane side of the man who took care of three lions and a leopard while training soldiers to fight in Angola. With his humour and distinctive style, he tells how his experiences in Cuando-Cubango opened his eyes to Africa’s paradise of abundant animal life. It also drove him to take on senior officials in military intelligence who were exploiting Africa’s wildlife for their own corrupt ends.
