Vision and Mission

VISION 

The Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies aims to be an internationally accredited seat of excellence. We strive to be globally competitive, regionally pre-eminent and locally relevant. Our training programmes, research and services are innovative, sustainable, relevant and of high quality. All activities are managed within a well-regulated, efficient and value-driven system. Having completed our courses, our students are equipped with essential academic, professional and general life skills.

We focus on:

  • Attracting sustainable funding through budget innovation
  • Increased research outputs through effective postgraduate programmes and increased collaboration
  • Actively promoting employment equity and student diversity
  • Recruiting and retaining the best people
  • Actively pursue the short term appointment of visiting specialists and scholars to enhance the intellectual environment, and
  • Maintaining a suitable infrastructure

MISSION

  • Maintain internationally acceptable standards in the teaching of species orientated companion animal medicine and surgery, clinical pathology, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesiology to under- and post-graduate veterinary and paraveterinary students, as well as in continuing education.
  • Conduct internationally acknowledged locally relevant research within the bounds of Faculty focus areas and departmental themes.
  • In support of the above create centres of excellence attractive to high quality national and international professionals and funding institutions.
  • Provide high quality, affordable clinical service in companion animal medicine and surgery to the broader South African community and the veterinary profession in support of teaching and research.
  • Play a leading academic role in the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria as well as nationally and in the sub-Saharan region.
  • Be an important role-player in Faculty based community programmes, and
  • Promote job satisfaction and professional growth for each of its members.
