Dr Yolandi SmitBSc, BVSc, MSc, MMedVet Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8141 Dr Smit’s research focused on orthopaedics in the equine athlete. Studies included musculoskeletal radiographic changes in 500 yearling Thoroughbreds horses at sales. Her research expanded to evaluate musculoskeletal radiographic changes of Endurance horses in South Africa. Further exploration to was done in the field of osteoarthritis when the intra-articular platelet-rich-plasma administration was researched. Currently her research focus now includes pre-operative and post-operative exploratory laparotomy complications (such as surgical site infections) and the management impact of treatment options there on and certain prognosticator markers (i.e., Lactate). |

Dr Adrienne ViljoenBVSc, MSc, MMedVet, DipECEIM Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8277 Dr Viljoen’s main research focus in the past involved the effects of synthetic colloids, a 4% modified flip gelatine and a 6% hydroxyethyl starch on haemodilaution, colloid osmotic pressure and haemostats in horses. Dr Viljoen is currently involved in several equine medicine projects and includes studies such as the clinical and clinicopathological findings in horses with equine encephalitis virus, the prevalence of Gastrodiscus in equids as well as a multicenter study investigating antimicrobial use and resistance in veterinary hospitals. |

Dr Christina EberhardtDVM, Dr. med. vet, DipACVIM Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8291 Dr Eberhardt is an active researcher in the field of equine cardiology. Her main research focus is echocardiography including advanced modalities such as speckle tracking echocardiography. Dr Eberhardt has developed a point of care echocardiography protocol for the evaluation of horses in the emergency and critical care situation. Her research also includes studying advanced teaching methods for echocardiography training. In addition, she collaborates with the Department of Wildlife Medicine to study the heart rhythm of white rhinoceros and other wildlife species using a telemetric mobile ECG device. |

Dr Ingrid CilliersBVSc, BVSc(Hons), MMedVet Email: ingrid.cilliers@up.ac.za Dr Cilliers’s research for her MMedVet degree was based on the incidence of catastrophic breakdowns of racehorses on the Gauteng racetracks. |

Dr Summer Maitland-StuartBSc, BVSc, MSc Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8046 Dr Maitland-Stuart is the equine ambulatory clinician for the Equine Clinic of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. Her main focus is on exposing students to day-one requirements of an equine veterinarian and allowing them to gain confidence with these skills. Dr Maitland-Stuart has done research into Gastrodiscus aegyptiacus infections in equids, including prevalence of infection in different groups as well as risk factors associated with infection. She is currently involved in a trial investigating a product to be used to provide symptomatic relief to equids suffering from insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH). |

His clinical and research interests include all aspects of internal medicine, but with particular emphasis on the emerging field of the gastrointestinal microbiome and its potential links to a number of disorders in the equine population. |

Dr Graeme Brandon PikethBVSc, MSc Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8071 Dr Piketh is an up and coming young researcher with goals aiming at research relating to the cardiovascular responses to systemic and infectious diseases in horses. His research interests also extend to immune mediated disease in horses with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease. His current research project aims at describing clinical and clinicopathological changes seen in horses, naturally infected with equine encephalosis virus. |
