Science and Technology Project at Sunnyside Pre-Primary Shool

Posted on April 26, 2017

Students enrolled for the compulsory undergraduate module, Community-based project Module (JCP) of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology did their fieldwork at Sunnyside Pre-Primary School.  For their project they decided to do the Tekki Tots project.  The Tekki Tots project was designed by the CSIR and entails that students teach Grade R learners the basic concepts of Science and Technology.

Students enrolled in the module have been doing the Tekki Tots Programme for a number of years.  The pre-schools involved are so positive about the outcomes of this project that they request on a yearly basis that students must come and present it at their school.  The programme has a number of lesson related to science and technology, for example shapes, colour, weight and height.

The students, Emily Black, Dané Coetzee and Mickey Lambrecht (all BCOM (Informatics) students) managed to link the pre-schools weekly these to the lessons of Tekki Tots.  Afterwards the students indicated that the children enjoyed having them there and loved the activities.  This project helped them to understand children more and it made them feel as if they made a difference by teaching the Grade R-learners fun ways to learn.  They indicated that it was a privilege to work with the school.
