Research interestsOrganic-Inorganic Hybrids, Materials Science, Crystal Engineering, Ionic and Coordination Hybrids, Structural Characterisation and Fluorescence of Hybrid Compounds. Materials science is an interdisciplinary field focussing on the synthesis, characterisation and properties of materials and has relevance in areas of science, medicine and engineering. The main aim of materials science is the design of materials with desired properties for specific uses using the principles of crystal engineering. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials comprised of an organic component and a metal halide as inorganic component are of interest in Materials Science since the composite hybrid material retains the properties of the individual building blocks. These materials are known to exhibit rich structural diversity, and interesting physical properties with potential application as sensors or luminescent materials. Ionic and coordination hybrids of metal halides and N-donor organic ligands are prepared via self-assembly. The structural and fluorescent properties of the diverse range of hybrid compounds, including complexes, one-dimensional polymers, cluster compounds, metallocycle and metal organic framework (MOFs) are investigated. These compounds are characterized using Single Crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and hot stage microscope We aim to understand the factors determining the structural characteristics and the fluorescence emission wavelengths and intensities of these hybrid materials. |
