He has provided insight on the technical dimensions of the G20 agenda and has highlighted the urgent need for institutional reforms and binding policy commitments that reflect the realities of a rapidly shifting world economy.

Channel Africa
On 18 November 2025, Professor Bradlow was interviewed on Channel Africa by Peter Ndoro and elaborated on his Conversation Africa article, highlighting the importance of prioritising policies that address Africa’s rising debt problem.

“I think if you speak to the leaders of the G20 countries, from the global north or to the people in the ministries of finance, they understand that the problem is not just [one] of money and technical finance or money and contracts… The problem is that the structures and the arrangements that they have set up to deal with how you deal with countries in debt distress focus on the technical issues. They don’t really deal with the developmental issues. “

Newzroom Afrika
On 17 November 2025, Professor Bradlow reflected on the importance and the impact of the G20 on South Africa when talking to Newzroom Afrika. Speaking to host Arabile Gumede, he elaborated on the challenges of getting leaders to reach a consensus on policy outcomes and to ensure compliance by sovereign countries with commitments made in these forums.

“Over the course of the year that South Africa has been the president of the G20, there have been about 130 meetings held in all nine provinces… So that gives an opportunity to show the world that we do things in an effective way. This year has gone smoothly from a G20 perspective, which his good for country [and] that can lead to more investment, more tourism.”

The Conversation Africa
Professor Bradlow published an article titled “Africa has a debt crisis: momentum from G20 in South Africa can help find solutions” on the Conversation Africa on 16 November 2025. The article argues that South Africa should continue to prioritise the financial challenges faced by African nations and provides three actions that South Africa can take once its presidency of the G20 comes to an end to ensure that the African debt crisis remains on the global governance agenda.

“The importance of debt, development finance and climate to Africa’s future is clear. Over half of African countries are either in debt distress or at risk of being in distress. More than half of Africa’s population live in countries that are spending more on servicing their debt than on health and/or education.”
