CMA is happy to announce the publication of three new papers in the Mediation Arguments series. The first paper, by Kasaija Phillip Apuuli, is entitled "Whither the Notion of 'African Solutions to African Problems'? The African Union and the Mali Crisis (2012-2013)" [click here]. This paper offers a critical examination of the role of the AU and ECOWAS in responding to the Mali crisis of 2012-13, which entailed both a coup and a rebellion in the north.

The second paper by Henning Melber is on "Dag Hammarskjöld and Conflict Mediation" [click here]. It discusses the successes, and the limitations, of the peacemaking and peacekeeping approach of Dag Hammarskjöld, UN Secretary-General from 1953 to 1961.

The third paper, "Picking up the Pieces: Mediation Strategies in Fragmented Conflicts", is by Joshua Levkowitz [click here]. It grapples with the problems that fragmentation of warring groups pose for mediation and identifies strategies that a mediator can use to deal with a fragmented conflict.
