Anne-Marie Bergh, PhD, is a senior researcher at the South African Medical Research Council Maternal and Infant Health Care Strategies Research Unit, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Focus areas of the unit include research programmes on the implementation of kangaroo mother care; integration of maternal, newborn and child health services; HIV/PMTCT; and perinatal and child mortality audits. Dr Bergh has been involved in the scaling up of kangaroo mother care programmes and in the development of educational materials in various countries, including Ghana, Indonesia, Malawi, Mali, South Africa, and the United Republic of Tanzania. As previous head of the Education Office in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University, she remains involved in medical education and educational research and acts as a consultant for the design of the capacity building and training programmes.
