Consultations

Team consultations

The CAAC staff are often approached by professional teams involved with people with severe disabilities (or people with complex communication needs) who need additional support and guidance in relation to AAC intervention.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Pre-consultation forms are sent out to the various team members e.g. speech, physio and occupational therapists, teachers, parents, spouses. Once these have been returned to the centre a date for the consultation can be set up.
  • On the day of the consultation a team of specialists from the CAAC will meet with the individual and all relevant parties. The centre has a firm policy not to see it's clients in isolation as it does not provide ongoing intervention for individuals. It is therefore essential that the client's support team is present at the consultation to contribute relevant information, to help formulate intervention goals and to learn more about implementing AAC strategies.
  • The support team may include family members, teachers, therapists or any other individual closely involved with the client.
  • A detailed report is provided by the Centre, which provides recommendations for the clients based on the CAAC team's consultation.

Medico legal consultation

The CAAC team also conducts medico-legal consultation on request, specializing in cases with severe communication difficulties, i.e. complex communication needs.
