BGM Committees

BGM UG Teaching and Learning Committee

The committee collates all university, faculty and departmental regulations and guidelines in the shared Team Drive. The Chair represents the Biological Sciences on the NAS T&L committee and gives feedback to all BGM staff. Compliance monitoring with respect to UP Policies needs to be put in place.

BGM Honours Committee

The committee discusses overlapping academic matters with respect to honours training but the three divisions function independently as far as possible. Annually the planning for the Joint Techniques Course needs to be scheduled no later than September.

BGM Postgraduate Studies Committee

The committee helps to streamline the PG administrative management system, based on shared academic principles. The Chair is responsible for reporting on BGM PG progress to the Faculty twice per year and signs off on all forms and applications (applications, title registrations, summary reports).
Together with the Research Committee, the committee members seek out funding opportunities with PG bursary and postdoc support being high priorities.

BGM Research Committee

The committee discusses the strategic direction of BGM based on current research focus areas. It also regularly scopes national and international trends. The committee assesses the research profiles of research active staff and advises staff members on research career development. It assists the mentoring committee to ensure that all staff members have rolling five-year academic career plans.

BGM Postdoctoral Advisory Committee

The committee regularly interact with the postdoctoral researchers in the department. The committee ensures PD researchers are fully supported by departmental administrative processes. Members liaise with the Deputy Dean for Research and the UP PD Office. The postdocs of the department interact with other UP postdocs via the UP-Postdoc Association.

BGM Early Researcher Forum Committee

The forum provides a platform for early researchers to discuss and organise support that they may need. Meetings are held once per month

BGM HR and mentorship Committee

The committee assists the HoD with HR support and implementation of a mentorship strategy in BGM.

BGM Transformation Committee

The committee assesses and makes recommendations with respect to transformation (in the full sense of the term) in BGM. Together with the Events Committee organizes an annual transformation activity.

BGM Finance Committee

The committee oversees all general departmental cost centres and communicates all general policies to BGM members.

BGM Infrastructure Committee (facilities and equipment)

The committee annually assesses the capital equipment and facilities needs in the department and submits a budget to the Faculty Manager when requested.

BGM Occupational Health and Safety Committee / Ethics Committee / Compliance Committee

Members support BGM to comply with all regulations and laws regarding occupational health and safety, ethics, laboratory registration and compliance. The OH&S Officers attend Faculty and Building Safety meetings and report back to the department on important matters.
The committee ensures that all departmental members are aware of UP policies and procedures to follow in case of accidents or other events that compromise the safety of staff and students or the integrity of the infrastructure. Lab managers ensure laboratory induction of all new members and adherence to policies and standard operating procedures. The committee ensures that all measures are in place to meet safety inspection standards.

BGM IT Committee

The committee annually assesses the IT needs in the department and submits a budget to the Faculty Manager when requested. Staff computer replacements are prioritised. The Chair reports on strategic developments at UP.

BGM Marketing Committee

The chair and selected members represent the department on the Faculty committee. With inputs from other staff the committee will prepare all marketing materials.

BGM Website Committee

The committee ensures that the departmental webpage is launched and regularly updated. All staff is requested to give their full cooperation when asked to provide material.

BGM Community Engagement Committee

This may form a sub-committee in marketing but the idea is to focus on our community engagement at multiple levels – to promote public understanding of science, to strengthen linkages with Basic Education, to link with the private sector and industry, to ensure that we translate our teaching and research to relevant stakeholders (such as in government).

BGM Events Committee

The committee arranges departmental events such as Honours Welcome Day, Spring Day, Research Days, etc.

BGM Seminars and Presentations Committee

The thematic committee members identify speakers from within BGM and beyond. The schedule presentations to fill all available slots and timeously circulates announcements on upcoming talks. They assist the Chair with organizing of the annual BGM Symposium.
