For many, education enables one to make contributions that are more meaningful to society, to better understand the human psyche and the way people engage the world. It is in this spirit that the faculties of Economic and Management Sciences and Humanities celebrated staff members who graduated with MPhil degrees in Communication Management.
“I have always considered UP to be a prestigious institution. I began working at UP in 2013 and for me it was a privilege to study here,” said Samantha Rabie, Postgraduate Coordinator, Department of Business Management. “This exposure has created great networking opportunities, including the making of new friends. My greatest challenge was studying while being a wife and a mother. Some of the difficulties I came across while studying was trying to find a balance between work, family and studies. As someone who volunteers at a drug rehab centre, I would love to take what I have learnt and incorporate the knowledge I have gained at UP into my everyday practices in order to make a difference in people’s lives.”

“Knowledge is power, and with a master’s degree in communication I have gained so much theoretical knowledge,” said Carto Abrams-Swarts, Operation Manager: Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership. “I’ve learned how to approach certain difficult situations on a daily basis in the workplace. I will be enrolling for a PhD in 2020 /2021. I aim to make a difference in my community, I also need to help change the mindset of future generations.”
Juanita Haug, Senior Administrative Officer, Faculty of Humanities said she found UP to be a supportive environment with caring lecturers and colleagues that walked this journey with her. “If you want a diverse student body and great lecturers, then #ChooseUP today so that you can Fly@UP and reach new heights. In 2017, while studying for my Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Management, I was one of the top students. I even received the Dean’s Award from the Economic and Management Sciences Faculty,” she said.
Rabie, who believes that studying at UP will broaden one’s horizons, concluded by saying the University encourages diversity and gives exposure to different people, cultures and backgrounds.
