Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Welcome to Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Pretoria

The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University of Pretoria is a large academic department with service-learning sites at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, Tembisa Hospital and Witbank Hospital.  Our primary referral base includes Laudium Community Health Centre, Pretoria-West Hospital, Tshwane District Hospital and Mamelodi Hospitals where training is also conducted, with outreach and support for these institutions. The hub of the department is based on the 7th floor of the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. In addition to lecture space and offices, the Reproductive Biology Laboratory is situated here.


The academic department has several functions:

1. Service delivery: The department aims to deliver evidence-based treatment of the highest order in an empathetic and respectful manner in all subspecialties in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

2 Teaching and training: Almost 1000 medical students are trained by and rotate through the department every year. The department is also actively involved in the training of registrars and sub-specialty fellows.  

3 Research: The department houses the SA-MRC Research Centre for Maternal, Fetal, Newborn and Child Health Care Strategies unit. There are several research themes actively being researched in the department. Several PhD, MMed and MSc students are completing their research.  Our lecturers are well represented at national and international O&G congresses.

4 Impact on the community and profession: Apart from providing medical care in our discipline, community involvement in the form of outreach, symposia and lectures, the Department contributes to the specialty by supporting and serving on professional committees and boards.
