Postgraduate Enrolment

The University of Pretoria (UP) is one of the largest research universities in South Africa, with nine highly regarded faculties that span the knowledge spectrum from classic academic fields to rapidly evolving new fields of study. We are home to Africa’s best business school, the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg, Africa’s best Faculty of Law, and South Africa’s only Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, near Pretoria. Our faculties comprise 120 academic departments that provide a combined course offering of over 1 200 programmes across our 9 faculties. View Faculties

Our programmes are locally and globally relevant. UP endeavors to create an environment that enables all students to maximize their own intellectual potential in their chosen field of study by providing a solid teaching and learning foundation that will lead our graduates to greater success in their careers, or light the spark of curiosity and discovery through further postgraduate specialisation and research.

We pride ourselves with being a research leading university in South Africa, with at least 66% of our academic staff being qualified with Doctoral degrees. We have service departments which are available to support postgraduate students in completing their studies successfully and timeously.

Postgraduate students, who are interested to enrol for Masters and Doctoral qualifications, should first identify their area of research interest. This makes it possible to identify, by visiting the University’s website, the relevant faculty and departmental web pages, and the profiles of staff members active in their areas of research interest. These academic staff members are the discipline experts and will be in a position to provide high quality research supervision. Opportunities also exist in the University’s many institutes, centres and units. Once students have identified a potential supervisor, they should establish whether the necessary research capacity is available and whether the Faculty can accommodate the student in its research programme. In the event that a student cannot identify a potential supervisor, the GSH will assist students in making contact with the relevant department and in identifying a supervisor.
