Welcome to the Research Chair in Poultry Health and Production

A Research Chair in Poultry Health and Production has been jointly established by the Southern African Poultry Association (SAPA) and the University of Pretoria, within the Department of Production Animal Studies of the Veterinary Faculty at Onderstepoort. The purpose of the Chair is to conduct research into issues that affect South Africa’s poultry industry, with a current emphasis on poultry diseases such as avian influenza, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis virus, salmonellosis and mycoplasmosis. The Research Chair works closely with the Poultry Disease Management Agency, poultry specialists within the Department, diagnosticians within the Faculty, collaborators across the country and world experts in specific diseases. Focus areas, guided by the needs of the industry, are taken up by postgraduate students as projects towards their Masters and PhD degrees. Genomics is a cornerstone of many of the current and ongoing research projects, and is already delivering fresh insights into the health status of the national flock. The upgrading of the Poultry Biosafety Level 3 laboratory, funded by the SAPA, is expected to enable poultry research at the Faculty on notifiable poultry diseases in particular, that has not previously been possible in South Africa.
