Revived Character & Expanded Meaning: Rewriting the Narrative

of Historical House Museums.

Project Location: Cullinan
Project focus area: Memory. Legacy and identity
Supervisor: Dr Anika van Aswegen
Project Intent

The significance of historical house museums across the globe, are challenged by society to establish the relevance of its inclusive meaning and how it caters for diversity and accessibility. It is evident that the validity of these exhibition places are changing along with the undeniable fact that the audiences are changing as well (Turino & Zannieri, 2019: 1).

Revived Character and Expanded meaning investigates the McHardy House museum in Cullinan as a case study in an attempt to rewrite the spatial narrative of the public house museum and expand its social and cultural meaning towards the future. The design strategy follows an experimental preservation process (Otero-Pailos, 2016) to establish the value of a ‘home’, as private space, and to further determine how different rituals and experiences shape the overarching, deeper meanings experienced by users in the public realm.
