Why take up postgraduate studies in Ancient and Modern Languages and Cultures?

As of the Hons programme, academic studies become intriguing, because as of now you begin to do research. You will formulate your own research question and learn how to answer it in a methodological fashion. You will enter the realm of true and own inquiry, searching and discovering answers for real questions.

The Hons programmes in our department will coach you how to execute such research. And if your research project is successful, you might even publish your findings in a scientific journal. The topics can range from linguistic to literary, socio-cultural, historical analysis of texts or even speech, or didactical questions of understanding, translating, interpreting or teaching texts, as well as African-European cultural relations.

The competence to critically analyse and interpret text is a fundamental skill of cultural and semiotic awareness. It will make you grow to a person who can see how meaning is created, or manipulated, and what the forces and processes of meaning making are, irrespective of whether you deal with ‘deep’ historical or poetic texts, or every-day discourse.
