ANCIENT GREEK

χαίρετε! Greetings! (or literally "Be joyful!")

Have you ever looked at something confusing and said "That's Greek to me"? Do those weird symbols in maths like π and λ and μ confuse you? Those are letters taken from the Greek Alphabet; but Greek doesn't have to be confusing or remind you of maths class.

If you study Ancient Greek with us, you'll be learning a language which has influenced literature, philosophy, politics and religion for centuries. Ancient Greek was used not only by people living in Greece, but in other parts of South Eastern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.

Choose Ancient Greek if you are a language student interested in one of the best-recorded ancient languages (in different ways, it has influenced many modern languages – the way we write, the words we use, and the way we study them), a literature student wanting to read the early poems and texts that have woven their way into western literature for centuries, or a student of religion wanting to read the New Testament other early Christian literature as originally written by their authors.

In our first year, we focus on introducing you to the alphabet (it’s really quite easy; ours is just a modified form of it), basic grammar and vocabulary. We focus on the variety used in the New Testament, since a lot of Theology students take the module with us. In later years, we expand the scope to look at other texts from the Classical Greek period (a time when poetry, drama, philosophy and democracy were in their infancy).

First year Course Codes: GRK 110 & GRK 120
