ANCIENT CULTURE STUDIES

WHY ANCIENT CULTURE STUDIES?

Apart from offering Hellenistic Greek, Classical Hebrew, Latin, and Medical Terminology, the ancient leg of the Department of Ancient and Modern Languages and Cultures also presents Ancient Culture Studies (AKG) from undergraduate until doctoral level.

In this course the ancient cultures of the Near East (Western Asia), the Mediterranean (Greece and Rome) and North African regions (Egypt and Nubia) are studied. They are studied from Before the Common Era, from the advent of writing, to the beginning of the Common Era, until the fall of the Roman Empire.

Various facets dealt with in this course include art and iconography, architecture, customs and values, daily life, geography, history, literature, philosophy, worldviews, material culture and physical remains, and religion and mythology.

Studying the ancient world will enable you to understand how cultures are received, interpreted, and transmitted across temporal and geographical distances. This will be done in an atmosphere that celebrates diversity and which will encourage openness and critical reflection. You will be equipped with the analytical skills to interpret textual and material remains by introducing you to new interdisciplinary interpretative methods and approaches – ancient and modern.

We can only understand our world today if we know where we come from and how we got here, and only then can we plan for the future.

PER PRAETERITUM AD FUTURUM – Through the past to the future.

Come and take a quantum leap with us!
