Biomathematics Days at University of Pretoria

The Mathematics Department was a buzz of excitement from 22 to 23 June 2017. With several overseas visitors to UP being present, four Biomathematics activities were held.

Firstly a Biomath Forum Lecture took place on the Prinshof campus on 22 June. The speaker was Leon Glass (McGill University, Canada) and the title of his lecture: Predicting the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death.

The second activity was a Postgrad student competition, Thesis in 3. During the competition students were required to condense their research into a three minute, one-slide presentation for non specialist audience. This was held the afternoon of 22 June and adjudicated by the visitors. The winners were: 1st Prize, Rebecca Bekker; Runner-ups, David Arogunjo; Phindile Dumani; Yash Madanha; Audience's choice, Emmanuel Amikiya.

An Open Colloquium of the Department of Mathematics was third in line, and the speaker was Prof Peter Hinow (Wisconsin-Milwakee, USA). The title of his talk was Linear Stability of Delayed Reaction-Diffusion Systems, and took place late afternoon on the 22nd of June on the Hatfield campus.

The closing event was a Biomath Forum Lecture by Peter Rashkov (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgaria), titled: Nontrivial dynamics in the dual phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle. This concluded the program on 23 June on the Hatfield campus
