'A Place to Call Home' project launch

Posted on March 19, 2018

In recent years, the City of Tshwane, the Tshwane Homelessness Forum, the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa entered into a social contract focused on the issue of housing scarcity which led to the establishment of a research project entitled Pathways out of Homelessness.

The aim of the project is the formation of a strategy which will guide the process of the City of Tshwane to work towards the global commitment of 150 cities to end or reduce homelessness for specifically vulnerable populations.

Thus on 15 March 2018, the University of Pretoria hosted A Place to Call Home, a public lecture and reception which served as the official launch of the project, as well as an indication of the University’s engagement with this global campaign.  Professor Jerry Pillay, the Dean of Faculty of Theology and Religion, was in attendance and pledged not only his personal support, but that of his Faculty and of the University.

Rosanne Haggerty, founder of the Common Ground Community and Community Solutions based in New York City, was the keynote speaker at this event.  She is a leading advocate in the global pledge to end street homelessness, and a social entrepreneur who has created innovative housing solutions, reducing homelessness by large margins in places like Times Square in New York City.

“The City of Tshwane is leading by example and will help other cities around the world to take action to end street homelessness,” said Kat Johnson, director of the Institute of Global Homelessness.
