Getting started with postgraduate studies

This page provides prospective students with a summary overview of postgraduate studies (including the application and registration process) in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (EECE).

BREAKING NEWS

Overview of degree programmes

The Department offers the degrees BEngHons, MEng and PhD, with specializations as outlined under Degrees, with Admission and Fulfillment Requirements. In previous years, a BEngHons had to be obtained in order to qualify for admission to the MEng. From 2024 onwards it will be possible to be admitted to the MEng directly after completing the BEng (provided that a cumulative weighted average of at least 65 % has been achieved for the BEng).

Postgraduate studies are research focused, and honours degrees (BEngHons) are structured to naturally lead into/prepare for a research masters degree. All postgraduate students will from the beginning of their studies be associated with a particular Research GroupEach group has its own lecturing/research staff members and specific requirements, e.g., regarding modules (coursework) that students must take for the honours degree.

BEngHons: Four modules must be successfully completed. Full-time students usually complete the modules within one academic year. Modules are presented within a distance-based framework via the clickUP platform.

During the semester, there are two weeks during which contact sessions are held for each module. During these weeks, students come to the Hatfield campus where they attend lectures and interact with lecturers and fellow students. (In many cases, attendence is not compulsory for overseas students.)  Note that your work on assignments etc. will begin when the UP academic year starts in the beginning of February.

MEng: This is a research masters degree, and a full dissertation must be written (no modules are required). In addition, an article must be submitted to an approved academic journal.

PhD: This is a research doctoral degree. A full thesis, requiring evidence of original research, must be written (no modules are required). In addition, one article must be published in an approved academic journal, and a second article must be submitted to such a journal.

How much will it cost?

In 2023, class fees have been as follows:

BEngHons: ZAR 47,912 for four modules (this is the full cost for the degree)
MEng: ZAR 20,960 per year
PhD: ZAR 22,460 per year

How to apply

Deadlines:

  • Any applicant whose most recent engineering degree is from UP (as well as current final-year UP BEng students): 30 November of the year before postgraduate studies commence
  • Any applicant whose most recent engineering degree is from another university: 30 November of the year before postgraduate studies commence
  • International students: 31 August of the year before postgraduate studies commence

The steps include the following:

1) See whether you meet the academic requirements for postgraduate studies at EECE (consult Degrees, with Admission and Fulfillment Requirements)

2) Consult the Research Groups page to decide in which research group you would like to work.

For honours study: review the group of elective modules prescribed by your preferred Research Group (Yearbook descriptions of the modules can be accessed by clicking on the name of the relevant BEngHons degree listed on the Degrees, with Admission and Fulfillment Requirements page, and then choosing the Curriculum: Final Year tab). Contact the head of the Research Group to confirm that the group can accommodate you, and to confirm the availability of a study leader for the compulsory core module Introduction to research EIN 732, and for the research modules EPT 732 and EPT 733 if you plan to take one or more of them. You are also welcome to contact a prospective study leader directly. Your study leader will likely be your supervisor during further study for a master’s degree or PhD.

For masters and PhD study: contact a potential supervisor that you would like to work with, and confirm their availability.

3) Follow the formal application process outlined under Application and Registration Procedure

How to register

Deadline: 31 January of the year in which studies commence

Once you have been informed by the University that your application has been successful, you need to register according to the procedure outlined under Application and Registration Procedure. (You will need to re-register in the beginning of every subsequent year of study.)

How to access module study materials and general information, once registered
